The festive season is a time of celebration, connection, and often indulgence. However, it can also present challenges for maintaining our fitness and movement habits. As Pilates teachers, we know the importance of staying active not only for physical health but also for mental clarity during this busy time. Here are some practical ways to keep your fitness on track over the holidays while complementing the Pilates method.

Make It Fun with Music

When I travel, I often find creative ways to stay active, even in limited spaces. One of my go-to exercises was simply stepping up and down on a step. It was easy to do anywhere and surprisingly effective. Adding music to this simple activity can completely transform it. Put on your favourite playlist or some festive tunes and let the rhythm motivate you. Music has a way of making movement feel joyful and energising, turning even the most basic exercise into a fun experience.

Short and Effective Sessions

The key to maintaining fitness during the holidays is consistency rather than intensity. Research shows that just ten to fifteen minutes of focused movement daily is enough to maintain strength, mobility, and cardiovascular health. The goal during this time is not necessarily to improve fitness but to preserve what you have built throughout the year. Short sessions that combine step-ups with core work or stretches can be highly effective and manageable even on the busiest days.

Indoor Fitness Ideas

When the weather is bad, as it often is during the winter months, having indoor options is essential. Step exercises are a great example. You can use a sturdy step inside your house or even the stairs for a quick cardio and strength boost. Alternate stepping up and down with other movements like lateral step-ups or step and knee lifts. For variety, combine this with Pilates-inspired exercises such as roll-downs or bridges to create a balanced routine.

Outdoor Options for Better Weather

If the weather allows, taking your movement outside can be refreshing. Find a step in your garden or a local park and incorporate it into your workout. Even a short walk with some added step-ups can make a difference. The fresh air and change of scenery can be motivating and help clear your mind.

Accountability and Motivation

Staying consistent can be easier with a little accountability. Whether it is a fitness tracker, a holiday fitness challenge, or simply checking in with friends or clients, having a system in place can keep you on track. Consider creating a simple challenge for your clients to keep them motivated during the holidays and lead by example by sharing your own efforts to stay active.

Festive Fitness Routine

Here is a simple routine you can share with your clients or try yourself:

  1. One minute of step-ups to music

  2. Fifteen seconds of lateral step-ups

  3. One minute of Pilates roll-downs

  4. Repeat two to three times

This short session is designed to elevate your heart rate, strengthen your legs, and incorporate core engagement while being quick and accessible.

Consistency Over Perfection

The festive season is about balance. Enjoy the celebrations but keep moving in a way that feels good for your body and mind. Remember, even ten minutes of focused movement a day adds up over time and can make a huge difference. As Pilates teachers, we have the opportunity to inspire our clients by demonstrating how to maintain health and wellness even during the busiest times of the year.

By staying active and encouraging others to do the same, we can enter the new year feeling energised, strong, and ready to take on whatever comes next.
