In this week’s Movement Monday, we’re diving into a unique approach to mastering one of Pilates’ most challenging movements—the Jackknife. For many clients, the Jackknife is a true test of balance, control, and core stability. Today, we’re introducing a MK Pilates preparation exercise: the Rolling Jackknife. This movement combines the Rolling like a Ball with the Jackknife, allowing clients to use gentle momentum to support themselves as they progress toward the full Jackknife with confidence and control.
Why the Rolling Jackknife?
As Pilates teachers, we know that challenging movements are rarely achieved in one go. The Rolling Jackknife offers a bridge, allowing clients to build strength and body awareness while engaging their core and stabilisers. By using momentum in a controlled way, they can explore the alignment and muscular activation required for the Jackknife without feeling overwhelmed by the full exercise.
How to Guide Clients Through the Rolling Jacknife
1. Start with the Rolling like a Ball
Begin with the Rolling to establish spinal articulation, core engagement, and upper body stability. As clients lift their feet overhead, cue them to press their arms into the mat and move with a smooth, controlled rhythm. This phase warms up the spine and prepares them for the lift needed in the Jackknife.
2. Transition to the Jackknife Position
Once clients reach the top part of the Rolling, guide them not to pause and but to use the stability. From here, cue them to engage their core and begin lifting their legs toward the ceiling, allowing the pelvis to follow. The hands slide up the legs and a good cue to like you are pulling your pant up.This lift gives them a taste of the Jackknife position while still using the support of momentum.
3. Control the Descent
On the way down, emphasise control. Cue clients to slowly lower each part of the spine, focusing on core engagement and spinal articulation. The slower they descend, the more strength they build for the eventual full Jackknife. This eccentric phase is essential for developing the control and stability needed to complete the movement independently.
The Power of Progressive Movements in Pilates
The Rolling Jackknife is a brilliant example of how we can adapt movements to meet our clients where they are in their Pilates journey. This preparation exercise isn’t just about building physical strength; it’s also about helping clients feel successful, motivated, and capable. With each attempt, they gain confidence and awareness, knowing that they’re moving steadily toward mastering the Jackknife.
In Summary
As Pilates teachers, our role is to make challenging movements achievable. The Rolling Jackknife allows clients to experience the beauty of the Jackknife in a manageable way, building strength, control, and resilience along the way. So let’s embrace the Rolling Jackknife as a powerful tool for progression, reminding clients that with patience and practice, no movement is beyond their reach.
Encourage them to enjoy the journey, celebrate each milestone, and approach the Jackknife with excitement and curiosity. In Pilates, every step forward is a victory, and today, the Rolling Jackknife brings them one step closer to mastery.
