Starting the day with intention can have a profound effect on our overall wellbeing, helping us to be more present, more resilient, and more connected to both ourselves and those we teach. Before diving into emails or facing the demands of the day, it’s crucial to create a small moment for yourself – to check in, reflect, and tune into how you’re feeling.
For me, the early morning is sacred. Waking up before the world stirs, I savour a quiet cup of coffee and simply be for a while. It’s my time to prepare, not just in terms of the day’s tasks, but to gauge where I am, mentally and physically. Interestingly, many of the most successful people in the world prioritise this type of mindful routine. It’s a practice that nourishes the mind, setting the tone for a focused and balanced day.
Here are a few other ways you might create your own meaningful start:
Breath Awareness or Meditation: Take just five minutes to sit in silence, tuning into your breath. Feel each inhale and exhale, letting go of any residual tension from the day before. A few minutes of deep, mindful breathing can help you start the day with a centred, calm mind.
Gratitude Journal: Jot down three things you’re grateful for. They don’t need to be big or profound; simple pleasures like the comfort of your bed or the sound of morning birdsong are enough. This small exercise can shift your mindset, cultivating a sense of appreciation before the demands of the day take hold.
Gentle Movement or Stretching: Start with some light stretching or a few Pilates mat movements. Mobilise your spine, open your chest, and engage your core gently. This can help awaken the body, increasing circulation and easing any stiffness from sleep.
Setting Intentions for the Day: Rather than launching straight into a to-do list, consider setting a few mindful intentions. Perhaps you’d like to be more patient, more present, or more energised today. This small act can align your day with how you want to feel, not just what you need to do.
Limit Screen Time: Resist the urge to reach for your phone or check emails first thing. Let this morning time be a space for you, uninterrupted by digital noise. It’s your moment to simply exist before others require your attention.
Visualisation: Take a few moments to visualise a successful day ahead. Imagine yourself moving through it calmly, handling challenges with ease. Visualisation can help prepare your mind for the day, boosting confidence and clarity.
Starting the day with any of these small rituals can help you stay grounded and balanced. As Pilates teachers, we often emphasise the importance of balance and control to our clients, and it’s essential we bring this same awareness to ourselves.
So, this Self-Care Saturday, take a few moments for you. How will you check in with yourself before stepping into your day?
