As we reach another Sunday, a moment of reflection before stepping into a new week, it is impossible to ignore how chaotic the world feels. Every time I turn on the television, another piece of news flashes across the screen, North America, Palestine, Ukraine, taxes on goods, it all feels relentless. And that is just outside the UK. Closer to home, the news is no easier. Stabbings, the ever-growing complexities of the healthcare system, and heartbreaking stories of individuals let down when they needed support the most. This week, in particular, has felt especially difficult.
Sometimes, I make the conscious decision not to put the news on. I never watch it in the evening because whether we realise it or not, this information seeps into our minds. It affects us, even if we tell ourselves it does not. The challenge is finding balance, navigating this overwhelming world while still staying grounded and sane.
As Pilates teachers, we have the unique ability to influence lives. We do more than guide people through exercises. We change how they feel, how they move, how they connect with their own bodies. We educate, we support, and we create space for people to feel better. But to be able to offer that, we must also maintain our own balance and integrity. We cannot pour from an empty cup.
That is why Sundays like today matter. A moment to reset. If you have the chance, step outside. Yes, the weather has been bitterly cold, but have you noticed the crocuses pushing through the soil? The daffodils, the snowdrops? These small reminders of nature’s rhythm bring reassurance. The world will keep spinning. The chaos will continue. But in our own small ways, we can still find peace.
However you choose to recharge, make it something that soothes your mind. For me, that means no news before bed and choosing entertainment that uplifts rather than drains. This week, I watched Wicked and I am still buzzing from the magic of it. These productions remind me of the beauty and talent in the world. Then, of course, there is TikTok. Those who know me well will already be aware, I love it. The dancers, the artists, the singers, it is incredible to see so much creativity in one place. But even with that, I have to limit my screen time. It is far too easy to fall into the digital rabbit hole and lose precious time.
So on this Soulful Sunday, before the new week begins, I hope you have taken a moment for yourself. To breathe. To reset. To remember that what we do is important. Never underestimate the impact of your work. It may sometimes feel like we are simply guiding people through movement, but the truth is, we do much more than that.
We give people a moment of peace in a world that often feels anything but peaceful. And that is something worth holding onto.
