Pilates Soulful Sunday: Lessons That Took Me a Lifetime to Learn

Writer: Michael KingMichael King

Every sunrise is a reminder that each day holds new beginnings and limitless possibilities.
Sunrise marks a new journey, bringing fresh experiences and endless opportunities each day.

I’ve always been a people pleaser. It’s in my nature. I’ve spent my life saying yes! sometimes too often, sometimes to the wrong things, and sometimes at the expense of my own well-being. Over time, I’ve learned that while kindness and generosity are valuable, self-preservation is just as important.

Life has been incredible. I’ve had the privilege of dancing, teaching, travelling, and experiencing more than I ever imagined. But along the way, I’ve also realised that there are certain principles worth holding onto, guidelines, not rules, that can help navigate both personal and professional life.

So, Pilates teachers and enthusiasts here are some thoughts for you today. Take them, adapt them, and apply them in a way that suits your own journey.

  1. Put yourself first – It’s not selfish; it’s necessary. You cannot pour from an empty cup. If you don’t take care of yourself, you won’t be able to give your best to others.

  2. Life doesn’t wait – Time moves forward, with or without you. If you have dreams, chase them. If you have goals, work towards them. Waiting for the perfect moment only means lost time.

  3. The world moves on – No matter how much you give, if you burn yourself out, life won’t pause. People will continue with their own lives, so make sure you’re prioritising yours.

  4. Build your own dreams – If you don’t, you’ll end up working for someone who did. There’s nothing wrong with helping others, but make sure you’re also investing in your own vision.

  5. Not everyone will be happy for you – Some people love to tear others down. Don’t let their negativity stop you from celebrating your achievements.

  6. Learn from your past, don’t regret it – Every mistake, failure, and wrong turn has brought you to where you are today. Use those lessons to move forward rather than dwelling on what could have been.

  7. Work hard, but work smart – Effort is essential, but so is strategy. Improve a little every day, and you’ll see long-term results.

  8. Take advice carefully – Only listen to those whose lives reflect the kind of success and happiness you want. Everyone has an opinion, but not everyone has experience.

  9. Find people who challenge you – Instead of resenting those who are better than you, learn from them. Surround yourself with people who inspire you to grow.

  10. Mind your own business – True peace comes when you stop worrying about what others are doing and focus on your own progress.

These lessons have taken me a lifetime to learn, but if they can help you navigate your own path more easily, then they’re worth sharing. Your time is valuable, your well-being matters, and your journey is yours alone. Make sure you’re living it on your own terms.
