The power of a smile: uplifting, warm, and a simple gesture of kindnessAs Pilates teachers, we often focus on the details—cueing, alignment, breath, and movement. But there’s another element that can transform the client experience and leave a lasting impact: a smile.
Over the weekend, I had one of those flying experiences that could have gone either way. Ryanair, as many of us know, is a bit of a gamble when it comes to customer service. Yet, yesterday, I encountered someone at the gate who was simply radiant. She smiled more than anyone I’ve seen in a long time, and her positivity was infectious. It reminded me how much of a difference a smile can make.
In our busy, often stressful lives, it’s easy to forget this simple yet powerful gesture. The same goes for our teaching. While we may feel the pressure to deliver a perfect session, ticking every box for alignment, technique, and progression, the warmth and encouragement of a smile can resonate just as deeply with our clients.
Smiling creates an inviting environment where clients feel supported and seen. It communicates reassurance and positivity, even when a movement is challenging or progress feels slow. And, as teachers, it helps us too. Smiling can shift our mood, reduce stress, and remind us to approach the day with lightness.
So, today, whether you're teaching, taking a class, or simply going about your daily tasks, make an effort to smile. Even if you're feeling the urge to scream inside, try to let a smile take over instead, it might just shift your perspective. And no, you don’t need to scream after (though if you must, maybe save it for after class!).
Remember, your energy as a teacher is just as important as your knowledge of the method.
A smile can brighten not only your day but someone else’s too. Let’s bring that energy into our Pilates world, because just like the movements we teach, a smile has the power to connect and uplift.
Today’s thought? Smile. It costs nothing, yet its impact is priceless.
