In these challenging times, we are all feeling the impact of rising energy and electricity costs. As Pilates teachers, our focus is on our clients, movement, and maintaining a healthy and balanced life. But it’s difficult to stay centred when the basic comfort of having a warm home becomes a luxury. This Thoughtful Tuesday, I want to step away from Pilates for a moment and talk about something we might overlook, vampire appliances.
Vampire appliances are those sneaky devices that silently suck energy even when they’re turned off but still plugged in. They may not seem like a big deal, but collectively they can add a surprising amount to your energy bill. Examples include TVs on standby mode, phone chargers left plugged in, microwaves, computers, and even that beloved coffee machine sitting ready for action.
Why it Matters: With energy prices climbing, every little bit saved can make a big difference. Reducing unnecessary energy consumption helps us avoid that creeping sense of dread when the electricity bill arrives. Plus, it means we can focus on what we love, our Pilates practice and teaching, without worrying about whether we can afford to put the heating on.
Simple Ways to Cut Back: Here are a few straightforward tips to reduce the energy drain from vampire appliances and keep those costs under control:
Unplug devices when not in use: If it’s not something you use every day, unplug it.
Use smart plugs: These allow you to control power to appliances remotely and set timers to ensure they turn off automatically.
Turn off standby mode: TVs, game consoles, and computers often consume power even when idle. Turn them off at the socket when not in use.
Upgrade to energy-efficient models: While this may require an initial investment, energy-saving appliances can reduce your long-term costs significantly.
Check your water heater temperature: Reducing the temperature by a few degrees can make a noticeable difference in energy consumption.
Reclaiming Focus: It’s hard to give our best as teachers when we’re distracted by the stress of rising costs. Small changes like these can help reduce financial pressure, allowing us to focus on what truly matters, our work, our practice, and supporting our clients.
This Thoughtful Tuesday, take a moment to reflect on the little things you can adjust in your home. Energy efficiency may not seem exciting, but it can bring you peace of mind and ultimately more space to focus on what you love, Pilates.
Let’s cut back on energy waste and stay warm, connected, and grounded in what matters most.
