I often judged things based on their price tag, especially when shopping online. If something seemed affordable, I would go for it, thinking I had made a smart decision. But as life unfolded, I realised I was often wrong.
In those moments, I wasn’t truly considering what came next—not two steps down the line, nor five or ten. Time and experience taught me that going for the cheapest option often ended up costing me far more in the long run than if I had invested wisely from the start.
What I didn’t see at the time was the true cost of my decisions. That cost is rarely evident when the choice is made. It reveals itself over time, and by then, it can be too late to avoid the consequences.
Each decision we make has a ripple effect, like tipping over a domino that sets hundreds of others into motion. A single poor decision can quickly spiral into larger problems.
Does that mean all is lost if you make a bad choice? Absolutely not. But imagine how much stress, time, and money you could save by making the right decision from the start. This is especially true when choosing a Pilates course.
Not All Pilates Training is Equal
In the UK alone, there are numerous Pilates training providers, large and small, offering a wide range of programmes. With so many options available, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. However, not all training programmes are created equal.
To help ensure quality across the industry, the Society for the Pilates Method (SPM) was established. The Society works to uphold high standards and consistency in Pilates training by inviting all training providers to align with agreed-upon content and teaching standards. While this framework benefits the profession as a whole, it’s important to note that not all training providers’ models fit within these standards.
The Importance of Quality Teaching
I follow a lot of Pilates content on social media. I regularly come across posts showcasing different exercises, some inspiring, others concerning.
Recently, I saw a video of someone attempting a challenging Reformer movement standing on one leg in arabesque. The person demonstrating it appeared to struggle with control and stability. The only instruction given was "slow, slow, slow," but there were no cues for centre, alignment, or support.
As an educator, this raised concerns for me. Not every movement is suitable for every body, and progression should be built on control and understanding, not just attempting advanced exercises. This was part of a training course, so I explored more clips from the same provider and noticed repeated inconsistencies with Pilates principles.
It made me reflect on how important it is that training prioritises safe, effective movement that upholds the integrity of the Pilates method. Yes, there are variations in Pilates. Yes, different approaches exist. But the fundamental principles remain the same. When movements deviate too far from these principles or are taught without proper guidance, the essence of the method can be lost.
How to Choose the Right Pilates Course
This is why it’s so important to thoroughly investigate training providers before committing to a course. Look at their content, their approach to movement, and whether they uphold the core principles of Pilates.
Ask yourself:
Are they teaching the Pilates method correctly?
Do they provide clear, structured guidance?
Are they respecting the foundations and principles of the method?
When deciding on a course, think beyond the immediate expense. Consider:
The expertise of the educators
The structure of the programme
The long-term value of the training
A high-quality course is an investment in your career and your future clients. It equips you to teach with confidence and integrity, ensuring you stand out in an increasingly crowded field.
The choice may not always be easy, but a well-made decision can set you up for success, while a poor one can hold you back.
Choose wisely, and choose quality. Your future self, and your clients will thank you
