Today, as the world watches the political rivalry unfolding in the US, I find myself reflecting on the parallels within our own Pilates industry. Much like the diverse tapestry of the United States, our Pilates community is rich, varied, and sometimes a bit crazy in its own right. The industry is often fractioned and split into different camps – classical or contemporary, and further divided by the numerous schools of Pilates that exist today.
I recently received an email from a client that really made me laugh and think. She thanked me with a "Namaste" and mentioned she was a STOTT teacher and only went to STOTT workshops. It struck me as strange and amusing because while STOTT is a respected school, limiting oneself to just one approach can stifle growth and expansion.
If you only surround yourself with people who are just like you, you never grow or expand. This client’s commitment to only attending STOTT workshops reminded me of the current political climate, where many people choose to stay within their own echo chambers, avoiding differing perspectives. The message for this Thoughtful Tuesday is to expand – don’t just stay within your perimeters. Try different ways, listen to other opinions, and embrace diversity in all aspects of life.
Just as the political arena benefits from a variety of voices, our Pilates practice thrives when we explore different methods and viewpoints. Engaging with other styles and schools can be incredibly enriching. Sometimes, attending a class outside your comfort zone might even feel like a bad experience, but it offers invaluable lessons and insights that can enhance your teaching and practice.
Make it a rule in life to be open to other opinions, even if they differ from your own. This openness not only applies to politics but is crucial in our professional and personal lives. By listening to different perspectives and trying new approaches, we can continue to grow and evolve.
Let’s commit to embracing the rich tapestry of our industry, welcoming diverse methods, and constantly seeking new knowledge. In doing so, we not only enhance our own practice but also contribute to a more unified and dynamic Pilates community.
So, let’s expand our horizons, appreciate the diversity within our field, and celebrate the differences that make us stronger and more adaptable teachers and practitioners.
