As Pilates teachers, we often remind our clients about the importance of balance, not just in their movement but in their overall wellness. Today, I’m delving into a topic that caught my eye recently: magnesium. But not just any magnesium, some products combines all the different types, promising a comprehensive approach to supplementation. It’s a fascinating concept, but does taking multiple types of magnesium in one supplement benefit us, or could it have drawbacks?


Understanding Magnesium and Its Role

Magnesium is a critical mineral, vital for over 300 enzymatic processes in the body. It supports muscle and nervous system function, energy production, and even helps maintain healthy bones. For us, as Pilates teachers, magnesium’s impact on muscle relaxation and stress reduction is particularly significant, it’s a mineral that quite literally helps our clients unwind.

However, magnesium comes in various forms, each with a slightly different function:

  1. Magnesium Glycinate: Known for its calming properties, often used to improve sleep and manage stress.

  2. Magnesium Malate: Favoured for muscle pain and energy production, especially for those with chronic fatigue.

  3. Magnesium Citrate: Aids digestion and prevents constipation.

  4. Magnesium Oxide: Primarily a laxative, though less bioavailable than other forms.

  5. Magnesium Chloride: Highly bioavailable and great for overall magnesium levels.

The idea of combining these into one supplement sounds practical, but what does the science say?

Benefits of a Multi-Magnesium Approach

Combining various forms of magnesium allows the supplement to target multiple functions in the body. For example, a product with magnesium glycinate and malate could support sleep and muscle recovery, ideal for both teachers and clients with busy, active lifestyles.

Additionally, pairing magnesium with complementary nutrients like Vitamin B6 can enhance its absorption and effectiveness. Vitamin B6, for example, plays a key role in energy metabolism and neurotransmitter regulation, complementing magnesium’s effects on the nervous system.

For clients and teachers prone to stress or muscle fatigue, such a formulation could provide a well-rounded solution, reducing the need for multiple individual supplements.


Potential Drawbacks

While a multi-magnesium supplement has its perks, there are considerations to keep in mind:

When recommending wellness products to clients, we always emphasise individuality. A multi-magnesium supplement might be ideal for someone seeking a comprehensive approach to improve muscle function, relaxation, and overall health. However, it’s worth reminding clients to consult with a healthcare provider, particularly if they have underlying health conditions or are taking medications.

For us as teachers, maintaining our own wellness is key. A product combining the different variants could be an excellent addition to our routines, especially after a long day of teaching or to aid recovery after physically demanding sessions. But remember: moderation and mindfulness are essential.
